April and Simeon Boatwright have quite the collection: two Buicks to start, and a Toyota Land Cruiser soon headed to a new home. Their keen eye for cars led them to a Honda Accord they immediately recognized as a diamond in the rough — a car that could easily be brought back to Mom’s exacting standards.

“My buddy was about to junk the car,” Simeon Boatwright said. “I gave him some money and he brought it down from North Carolina. We were going to redo the car for ourselves, but my mother-in-law just got a job, so I told my wife, ‘Let’s give her the car.’ So we did — on Mother’s Day.”

For the Boatwrights, working on cars has always been a family tradition.

“I was six when my dad finally let me hold a wrench,” Simeon Boatwright said. “He told me, ‘Don’t leave it in the dirt. It’ll take care of you like you take care of it.'”

Home Yard: Pull-A-Part of Columbia.

Today’s Project: We’re getting rims, tires and a cooling fan for my mother-in-law. We already got a new air conditioning compressor and replaced the power steering pump. It was running steelies, and we thought, “We can do better than that” — so now it has wheels.

Why Pull-A-Part: I like the thrill of the chase. I know you’ve got it, so I’m going to come looking for it.

I’ve been working on the Accord for two weeks. I got the whole day off today, so I decided to come out to Pull-A-Part.

Favorite Car: Our 2000 Buick LeSabre. It’s a beauty. It’s just smooth. We bought it about three and a half years ago. I’ve been coming to the salvage yard for about five years — we’ve had about seven of them.
